RSS Feed

Travel Feed RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. A syndication is a system for distributing information to a large number of people easily such as a newspaper syndication. An RSS Feed is an easy way for you to keep up with new items being posted on web sites that have RSS Feeds available, without having to visit the site first.

Once a day, or whenever you tell it to, your RSS reader will check the websites you have subscribed to for updates. If you check your RSS favorites you will be able to see if there have been any updates since the last time you looked.

You can subscribe to a Feed only if you have a program that can read an RSS file. These are called feed readers or aggregators. To subscribe to a feed, just click on the RSS icon. If you have an RSS reader, then you will see a page where you can either Subscribe to this Feed or copy the feed address into your stand alone reader. If you don't have a compatible RSS reader, then you will see a page full of gobbledegook. In that case, you need to get a reader.

Internet Explorer 7, Outlook 2007 and newer versions of FireFox have built-in Feed readers. Outlook Express version 6 does not have a Feed reader, but there are a number of Feed readers and feed reading plug-ins available on the Internet. For a free stand alone reader try this one from FeedReader.com

Travel Pages Navigation

Each page covers one month of our travels. At the top and bottom of each page you will see calendars. Click on the month name to go to the top of that month's page. Highlighted days are the first day in a new campground. Clicking on a day will jump you to that day. In the upper corners of the month, the yellow arrows will take you forward or backward to the next available month.

Google Earth Google Earth

You can select any Google Earth icon on our pages to zoom into a location being discussed or to follow along while we drive.

You must have Google Earth installed before using this feature. Google Earth is a free program and is easy to install.

Once you have Google Earth installed, click on any of our Google Earth icons.
When prompted choose "Open"
Hint, if you Un-check the box that says "Always ask before opening this type of file" you won't have to approve opening Google place marks each time.

When you close Google Earth you will be asked whether to save temporary items to your My Places folder. If you are just checking out one of our place marks, you will want to chose "No", unless it's somewhere you really want to visit for yourself, then chose "Yes".

You can have Google Earth follow along as we travel.

  1. In Google Earth, select "Add > Network link"
  2. Name the link something so you know it is us and not some other placemark
  3. In the Link field enter the following   http://CliftonCreek.net:443/cowboy.kml
  4. Enter a description if you like
  5. Click on the "Refresh" tab
  6. Under "Time-Based Refresh" select "Periodically" from the drop down list
  7. Adjust the time to 60 seconds or longer
Please do not set refresh shorter than 60 seconds for our placemark
Faster refresh rates won't improve your viewing and may limit other's access to this feature
  8. To have Google Earth follow along with us, check the box "Fly to View on Refresh"
  9. You can change any of these settings by right clicking on the placemark and choosing "Properties"

The above will add us to your "My Places" list
You can keep the placemark there, just uncheck it unless you are actually following along
Soon I may be offering another option using a program called GooPs which will allow live moment to moment updating of our location. Stay tuned as I learn the system and attempt to get it working.

Google Maps

If one of our locations includes a Google Maps link, you can use that without installing special software; however, the map will only show you where we are now, or where we were when our GPS was last turned off. Google Maps is the best way to view a daily route as the line tends to break up with Google Earth if viewed in full mode. Please note the if you visit a single point place mark in Google Maps the view tends to zoom down to ground level and you can't see any map. Zoom up using either your scroll wheel, the minus (-) key on your keyboard or the zoom control on the map.

Trailer Location Google Earth Google Maps

This is a placemark of our trailer location. You must have Google Earth installed to use this feature Google Earth, however, anyone can use the Google Maps Google Maps feature without any special software. The mark is updated once an hour when we are connected to the internet and my main computer is on. If the trailer has no internet connection or my primary computer is off the last known location and time will be shown. The bottom point of the green pin marker shows our location within about 50 feet.

Camera Notes

Trailer cameras are updated every 15 minutes.
The last image is always available even if the box says Camera Off
Our Internet connection is usually through our truck so if the truck is not near the trailer, those images can't be updated.

More coming soon.
